Lufthansa Technik Philippines mulls expansion

Aviation Updates Philippines – A report from the Philippine Daily Inquirer disclosed that Lufthansa Technik Philippines, Inc. (LTP), a joint-venture established in 2000 between Lufthansa Technik AG and MacroAsia Corporation, plans to widen its operations in the Philippines with the expansion of its 229,000 square-meter lot adjacent to the Villamor Airbase.

The planned expansion was announced after a meeting between the Philippines Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez and LTP President and Chief Executive Officer Elmar Lutter. The government body estimated it will generate 300 more jobs which will complement the existing workforce of LTP's 3,200-strong personnel upon completion.

According to the Trade secretary, the envisioned 9,000-square meter expansion in Manila will cost roughly $40 million and 13 months to complete after the contract is awarded.

LTP, the Philippines' largest maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) company for the aviation sector, has operations across the country with satellite offices in Cebu, Clark, Davao, Palawan and Aklan—enabling the company to extend its reach to sustain other airports.

“The Philippines is positioning itself as the hub for aerospace manufacturing and aftermarket services in the Asia Pacific Region. We have the young, educated, and highly-trainable workforce that is a boon to investors. If we achieve this goal, we can increase our high-value exports and provide decent jobs to more Filipinos,” Lopez told The Manila Bulletin.

Currently, LTP is one of the leading MRO facilities in the Asian region with customers from Philippine Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Qantas, Asiana Airlines, British Airways, AirAsia X, among others. The A380-capable facility also enjoys the maintenance of the double-decker aircraft from operators across the globe.

During the last quarter, Lufthansa Technik AG, LTP's parent, hired 1,200 more staff across Germany as part of its massive global expansion in 2019. Lufthansa added: “The move is part of the Lufthansa Group's plans to hire some 5,500 new employees across its home markets in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.”

With reports from The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Manila Bulletin, and Lufthansa Technik Media Center.
