PAL to operate limited international flights amid enhanced community quarantine

Aviation Updates Philippines – National flag carrier Philippine Airlines said it will continue to operate international flights in the next few weeks amid the enhanced community quarantine imposed on the island of Luzon.

On its website, PAL said it will still fly to some international destinations albeit on a significantly reduced capacity. The response comes after the Philippine government requested for assistance to enable foreign nationals and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to fly outbound.

PAL will temporarily discontinue flights to Auckland, Port Moresby, Brisbane, Melbourne, Taipei, Jakarta, Bali, Sapporo, Phnom Penh, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dubai from March 20 to 31, 2020. The flag carrier's flights to mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Korea, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, however, remain suspended due to internationally imposed travel bans.

"A full restoration of PAL’s network is not possible at this time. The suspension of public transportation and other impediments to movement within and into Metro Manila, due to the ongoing community quarantine, have limited the manpower levels at Manila airport.

"Furthermore, travel bans and restrictions imposed by various governments have forced the cancellation of some routes and significantly reduced actual travel between countries amid the COVID-19 situation," the airline said.

For flights from April 1 and onward, PAL is expected to release an announcement soon since the matter is still a developing situation.

PAL is also offering free rebooking to all passengers who were scheduled to fly from March 15 to April 30, 2020, as a "public service." Fare differences will be waived as long as the rebooked flight has the same class type.

"We continue to offer the normal range of airfares on all of our flights, including lower fares with standard conditions, as approved by the Philippine Civil Aeronautics Board and the regulatory authorities of the countries we serve. We have not increased fares in any of our cabin classes."
