Aviation Updates Philippines – Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) delivered an estimated 35 tons of medical cargo from India to the Philippines to help the country with its ongoing battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, through a series of flights from Mumbai to Manila last June.

In a Facebook post, PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said that the flights were operated on June 12, 14, 16, 27, and 28 with an Airbus A330-300.

The aircraft used for these flights were also used to transport over 1,000 Indian seafarers who had been stranded in Manila.

The special cargo missions were facilitated by Groupe Concorde, PAL's General Sales Agent in Mumbai.

Villaluna also described the June 14 flight as "most noteworthy", as it had carried 25 tons of cargo and had the World Health Organization (WHO) as the charterer and the Department of Health (DOH) as the recipient.

Aside from ferrying medical supplies, the flights also carried around 15 tons of general cargo.

Over the past few months, PAL flew a number of cargo-only flights to transport medical supplies, equipment, and other goods to various provinces throughout the country. Last April, the Philippine Red Cross also chartered a PAL A320-200 to carry medical supplies from Changsha, China, to Manila.

"The role of cargo business units and its business partners all over the globe is critical in this period of Covid-19. Efficient coordination among stakeholders helps facilitate the transport of vital medical cargo to intended recipients. We thank our global customers for their trust in PAL's cargo business services," Jason Siy, head of PAL's cargo business, said in a statement.
